A randomized, controlled study to evaluate the effect of parenteral glutamine on the reduction of infection related morbidity in burn patients in ICU

Background: Burn patients are characterized by alterations within the immune system, increased exposure to infectious complications, sepsis, and potentially organ failure death. Glutamine supplementation parenteral nutrition has been proven be related improved clinical outcomes in trauma patients. We studied effect of glutamine on infection among burn patients.
 Methodology: Sixty were randomly divided into two equal groups. Group I received 0.5 gm/kg/day infusion as a part for seven days after ICU admission. II an intravenous placebo continuous (24 h/day). The primary outcome was presence assessed wound culture over 15-days period. secondary were: blood culture, WBCs count, serum C-reactive protein (CRP) procalcitonin, sequential assessment (SOFA) score, length stay intensive care unit.
 Results: results showed that incidence positive considerably reduced group, e.g., 6 (10%) patients) vs. control 19 (33%) patients; P < 0.001). significantly study group (1 case) (9 cases; = 0.006). In addition, WBC, CRP procalcitonin better; SOFA score ICU-stay group.
 Conclusion: present prove IV adult can reduce impact morbidity improve outcome.
